History of the Cultural Center of Ermoupolis

The Cultural Center of Ermoupolis was built in 1863, under the supervision of the Italian architect Pietro Sampo. Its monumental view stands out for the marble parapet, the balcony, the masonry, the Tuscan columns, the stonework and the cornice.

The building was originally under the domination of the Italians and then bombed and suffered many disasters. By the 1970s, the Club of Greece had been housed, and the Club had since granted the building to accommodate the Cultural Center of Εrmoupoulis, which organized various events until 1998, that it was renovated and started to house the Congressional Center.

The painting decoration had suffered great damage, which was restored by painter Anna Vassilaki.

History of the "Apollon Theater"

The Apollon Theater is a building of great historic significance, directly linked to the history of the island and its culture. Ever since the establishment of Hermoupolis, it became apparent that the city needed a theater that could host a variety of events and house theater groupes visiting the island.

The foundations of the Apollon Theater were laid in late 1862 on the grounds of Plateia Theatrou, quite close to Miaouli Square. The theater was designed by architect P. Sampo who, at the time, was employed in his capacity as an architect by the Municipality of Hermoupolis. The Municipal Theater which was named “APOLLON” opened its doors for the first time on April 20, 1864 with Verdi’s Rigoletto in the presence of Michalis Salvagos, the man who envisioned the theater’s construction.

Today, the theater stands fully restored and has been returned to its original state as accurately as possible, having an average capability of hosting 350 spectators .The Apollon Theater is a superb architectural treasure of Hermoupolis, hosting various cultural events and the Festival of the Aegean.
